A n island set in a rice paddy countryside, the provincial capital of Siem Reap City serves as the gateway to the millennium-old ruins of the Khmer Empire of Angkor. Siem Reap City is where you will probably stay during your visit, just 15 min- utes from the temples. The town offers a large and varied choice of accom- modations, from boutique hotels and 5-star resorts to dozens of mid-range places and budget digs. But it’s the restaurants, shopping and nightlife where Siem Reap outdoes itself - the amazingly varied dining choices, the vibrant night scene, and uniquely Cambodian shopping opportunities. The Angkor Archaeological Park encompasses dozens of temple ruins

6

including the legendary Angkor Wat whose cultural significance and visual impact put it in a class with the wolrd’s greatest monuments. And though the temples are very well touristed these days, it is still possible to capture a bit of the old spirit and discover Angkor...and Cambodia. Try to set aside some time to experience a bit of Khmer culture and nature away from the town and temples: boat trips on the Tonle Sap, stilted villages and the bird sanctuary, silk farms, road tours through rural countryside and beyond.

weather & climate

cambodia fact file

Practically speaking, Cambodia has four seasons: 1) December-February, cool and dry; 2) March-May, hot and dry; 3) June-August, hot and rainy (monsoon season); 4) September-November, cool and dimin- ishing rain. As we go to print in May it's the middle of the dry sea- son and the hot season is now in full swing. It is offi- cially the low tourism season but weather-wise it is still a fairly good time to visit the country - hot but rain-free temple touring weather. Ordinarily, the dry-hot season brings mid-day tem- peratures in the mid-30s, cloudless hazy skies and occasional afternoon showers known as 'mango showers,' (brief rains said to help the mangos ripen.) So far this year the hot season has been particularly warm all across Southeast Asia including Cambodia, setting records in some areas, with temperatures exceeding 40C some days. Prepare accordingly when visting the Angkor ruins - wear light covering clothing, bring a hat or umbrella, sunglasses, sun- block cream, and drink plenty of liquids. Like the building heat of the hot season, the mango showers will build in intensity until the monsoon season rains begin in late May or June. And with the rains, the heat will eventually begin to taper off.

T he main body of town stretches about 3-4 km north/ south along the river and roughly 5-6 km east/west along National Highway #6. The airport is 6km and 20-30 minutes

west of town center. The Angkor Park lies 5km north of town center and there are no hotels with- in the park. Most tourist services are in or near town, though there is a growing number of hotels at the outskirts, offering a more tranquil setting.
